  1. Love this architecture!

WHO was it that partitioned Korea???

    • Sam says:

In short “We did” is a partial answer… More specifically: The allies partitioned Korea in what was supposed to be a temporary situation in 1945, but due to communist/Soviet/Chinese influence in the North and capitalist/USA influence in the South, followed and compounded by disagreements over elections and reunification based on UN plans, and cross-border violence and tensions, the Korean War broke out in 1950 and has been in ceasefire since 1953.

  2. Lynn Saville says:

Beautiful photograph! I saw a temple with similar courtyard and staircase layout in India….but the colors and architecture especially the roof is very different.
    Congratulations!
    Lynn

    • Sam says:

Thanks Lynn! Yeah, all the temple rooflines in Korea were similar to this and beautifully painted. It was fun to shoot the patterns and woodwork.

  3. Aunt Celeste says:

What beautiful colors and designs, and the green mountains just set it all off beautifully. Lovely, Sam!

Thanks for the picture of South Korea’s distinct beauty.

Two important religious sites occupy mount Toham: Seokguram Grotto near the summit with a large stone-carved buddha inside, and the gorgeous, peaceful temple complex of Bulguksa below on the slopes. Both are a Unesco World Heritage site. We visited both in the hot and humid monsoon season, but were still entranced by the beauty and spirituality in these holy sites. Don’t forget, the Swastika is a symbol of peace and religious blessings in all of Asia despite its nefarious use in the 20th century by the Nazi demagogues.
