Yangon [once Rangoon] is world famous for the “Shwedagon Paya”, a golden spired pagoda/stupa. [Pagodas and Stupas in Burmese are called "Paya"]. All Burmese Buddhists hope to visit and pray at this site in their lifetime. Amazingly, every year the monastic community re-guilds the tower because it is pounded by 6-8 months of daily monsoonal rains, and loses much of its gilding! I visited during the monsoon, so everyone carried umbrellas, and we meditated under the eaves of side chapels in front of the central spire. (photo taken in August 2009)
