Burning Man Photo-Essay

ENVIRONMENT: . . . . . . . . . • Tent City •

This image shows an art installation (the butterfly), the main causeway (the Esplanade), and the tent city behind. The Esplanade is marked by wooden posts, from which are hung lanterns at night.

The geodesic dome is lit up at night and is filled with a dance party, but by day it is only one of many cool shady zones in the tent city.

Groups that can afford the time and supplies register as "Theme Camps". They usually arrive early, set up on the Esplanade, and in special zones. They raise larger group-space tents like domes and dance floors. These groups return year after year and host special events, usually parties, and build special rides (see video) or interactive games.
