Hiking In The Himalayas Photo-Essay

En route to Hemkund a large swath of the path was covered by the winters' snowfall and recent avalanches.

Workers carved steps and strung a rope rail. Sikhs who had never been near snow gripped the rope with trembling hands, and climbed slowly with anxiety and excitement

Later, light rain caused a minor avalanche. Panic-stricken pilgrims froze at this place where no stairs remained. I held hands, guided people, and told many to slide down on their butt to assist movement along a severely congested line of descending pilgrims.
