Hiking In The Himalayas Photo-Essay

A cairn is a man-made pile of stones to mark a trail. This beautiful example crowns the top of a two-kilometer hike to summit the Gaumukh Glacier.

Focus on this cairn allows hikers to each take a different path over muddy, icy, rocky slumps to reach the same point atop the glacier. From here one overlooks the valley below before continuing further above.
